NORFOLK, Va., March 7, 2017–Behind a balanced scoring attack and a quick start, seventh-seeded North Carolina A&T defeated 10th-seeded North Carolina Central 71-58 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women’s First Round on Tuesday at the Norfolk Scope.
The Aggies now advance to face second-seeded Howard on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Aliyah Kilpatrick scored 15 points to lead five Aggies in double figures. Quenswayla Story added 14, Alexus Lessears had 12 and a team-high seven rebounds, Dana Brown and Channing James added 11 apiece for the victors.
North Carolina A&T State closed the first quarter on an 11-2 run over the last six minutes to lead 22-6 on a free throw by Channing James with 37 seconds left.
A late bucket in the first quarter by Rodneysha Martin of North Carolina Central helped start 13-4 run that went through the entire second quarter as the Eagles held the Aggies to an 0-for-12 from the field and 4-of-6 showing from the foul line. Chantel Thomas hit a free throw with 4:50 left in the half for a 26-19 Eagle deficit.
The Aggies found their shooting touch in the second half hitting 8-of-14 from the field (57.1%) to take as much as a 15-point lead on a Brown jumper with 1:18 left to lead 46-31.
That hot streak continued in the fourth as the Aggies were 9-of-13 from the floor (69.2%) and pushed the lead to 17 points on a 3-pointer from China McCray with 4:29 left for a 60-43 advantage. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 64-55 on a Morgan Jones 3-pointer with 42 seconds left but that was as close as they got. Jones was the leading scorer for North Carolina Central with a game-high 17 points.
