Hampton to take on Manhattan in NCAA First Four < All News

HAMPTON, Va. – The MEAC champion Hampton University men’s basketball team will open the NCAA Tournament in the “First Four” on Tuesday at the University of Dayton’s Flyer Arena, taking on Manhattan at 6:40 p.m. EST.

The game will be televised live on TruTV.

The winner of this game will earn a No. 16 seed in the Midwest Region, where they will face overall No. 1 seed Kentucky on Thursday in Louisville, Ky.

The Pirates (16-17) are making their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance as a Div. I program, and its first since 2011, after defeating Delaware State 82-61 on Saturday in the championship game of the MEAC Tournament.

Hampton won four games in six days to take the title, and junior guard Deron Powers, a Third Team All-MEAC selection, was named MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after averaging 16.3 points per contest over those four games.

Junior guard Reginald Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 16.5 points per game in the tournament, and he led the Pirates with 20 points – along with junior guard Brian Darden – in the title game against Delaware State.

Hampton also played an opening game in Dayton, Ohio in 2006 against Monmouth.

The Jaspers (19-13) have won four straight games after a 79-69 win over Iona in the championship game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament on Sunday, March 9. It was Manhattan’s second straight title.

Manhattan is in its fourth season under head coach Steve Masiello, and the Jaspers boast senior Emmy Andujar, who was named First Team All-MAAC, as well as Third Team All-MAAC selection Ashton Pankey.

Andujar leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest. Pankey is second on the team in both categories at 13.5 points and 6.7 boards per contest. Shane Richards is third on the team in scoring at 13.1 points a game.
